Technology use reveals a more sinister reality (manipulation and control), where the same tools that are meant to connect and empower us, can control and manipulate us. For example, social media platforms have been criticized for the spread of misinformation and prioritizing profits over user safety. For example, the marketing of beauty products creates unrealistic benchmarks of beauty which translate into anxiety in the youth and low self-esteem.

Technology has enabled harassment and exploitation in society today. There are new forms of online harassment, bullying and exploitation. Scammers are using cyberbullying, online stalking and revenge porn on online victims leaving them vulnerable and helpless. This is all possible due to the anonymity of users. It has facilitated hate speech, terrorism and extreme ideologies which threaten global security.

Technology use is also associated with health issues like migraines from screen time, eye strain and vision loss due to prolonged screen time. Also sleep disturbance due to exposure to screens and blue light can disrupt sleep patterns, leading to insomnia and daytime fatigue.
